In this one day workshop we will explore the joys of using a sewing machine to quilt your beautiful tops. We begin the day with information about setting up your machine and about the importance of basting the quilt well. We then practice quilting using the Walking foot for straight lines and then progress to the elusive free motion quilting using a darning foot. In the afternoon, we will continue to practice (either on a sample of muslin or on a pre-printed top) and will talk about threads, needles, marking quilts and the process of selecting designs for your quilts. Basic sewing supplies are needed, along with a walking foot and darning foot that will fit your machine.
TWO PATHS TO MACHINE TRAPUNTO:
Classic Trapunto quilts were made by quilting channels or designs, putting slits in the backing fabric and then stuffing the openings with extra batting. The result was to add wonderful texture to the quilt. The same results can be obtained today using a sewing machine and machine quilting, and without the need to cut holes in the back of the quilt. This workshop lasts about 3 hours and explores two different methods for making a Trapuntoed quilt. There is a pre-requisite to this class....the participant must be proficient in free motion quilting.
